Joke Domino Dragon

In keeping with my goal of posting on
a regular basis, I wanted to share this little joke. We can all use
a good laugh during the day.
Do You Know Who I am
A few minutes before the church services started, the congregation was
sitting in their pews and talking. Suddenly, Satan
appeared at the front of the church. Everyone started screaming and running
for the back entrance, trampling each other in a frantic effort to get
away from evil incarnate.
Soon the church was empty except for one elderly gentleman who sat calmly
in his pew without moving, seemingly oblivious to the fact that God's ultimate
enemy was in his presence.
So Satan walked up to the man and said, 'Do you know who I am?'
The man replied, 'Yep, sure do.'
'Aren't you afraid of me?' Satan asked.
'Nope, sure ain't.' said the man.
'Don't you realize I can kill you with one word?' asked Satan.
'Don't doubt it for a minute,' returned the old man, in an even
tone.
'Did you know that I can cause you profound, horrifying AGONY
for all eternity?' persisted Satan. 'And you 're still not afraid?'
asked
Satan.
'Nope,' said the old man.
More than a little perturbed, Satan asked, "Why aren't you afraid
of me?"
The man calmly replied, 'Been married to your sister for 48 years.'

YellowDay

I started this blog with the best of
intentions and I was warned that this would probably be one of the hardest
jobs I would ever do and boy were people right. Trying to find topics
and time to write about seems like a full time job in and of itself.
So, I have picked the topic of working
from home to talk about on this Yellow Day. For most full timers
and contractors this would seem a dream job, but be warned there are many
new challenges facing a person when they switch from working in an office
environment to working out of their house/apt.
Here are a few tips for keeping on track
when working from home.
#1. If you do not live alone,
set aside a room in your house where you can create your own office. Why?
It will give you a sense of structure. This will force you
to go from being a parent or weekend warrior to being a productive worker.
For me it puts me in the proper mind set of now I am no longer on
my time, but on my client's time and I need to focus on the task(s) at
hand.
#2. In your new office space make
sure you have a comfortable work area. Why? There is nothing
worse then sitting in one spot for an extended period of time and standing
up and realizing that you back hurts. If this happens you will be
no good to yourself and your boss/client(s).
#3. If you do not live alone (i.e.
wife, kids, parents, pets or extended family) you must make it perfectly
clear when you are in your office space, that you are actually working
and that they need to think of you as being in an office. Why? Trust
me on this one, people will ask you questions, make noise or just not think
that you might be working on a tight deadline. In this situation
you will need to show some understanding and gently teach them that hey
I am working here and asking me what do I think about repainting the kitchen
is not appropriate while I am trying to code that new website for the client
who is paying me $10,000.00 and wants it by tomorrow.
#4. Remember to take a mental
break from your work. I think everyone needs to step back and let
our brains rest, even for a short period of time when working. When
we are in the office we normally do this by talking to co-work(s) at work
who sit next to us or by getting up from our desk and walking over to get
a cup of coffee. I would suggest at the very least to take a much
needed stretch break. Get up from your chair and just get a good
stretch. Try not to leave your office if you have kids at home because
this concept will be very hard for them to understand why Mommy or Daddy
can not play with them, now that they are out of their office.
#5. And finally for today, write
out a "To Do List" for that day and check off task as you complete
them. This might seem like you are creating more work for yourself,
but I find this invaluable. The name of the game is to keep on task.
The list will help you to stick to what is important and not become
distracted with little trivial items. Especially when you have deadlines
coming up.

I really don't love the Lotus Notes
mailbox template. Things just seem to be buried.
For instance, if you create an appointment
calendar entry, the document is always forced into edit mode. We
had a request from the end users where they wanted the document to be in
read mode for security purposes. The actual code is in a Script Library
(CSCalendarEntry). If you look under Declarations and do a search
for EditMode = True you will find it.
From there it is a simple matter of
changing it to False or in my case I did a check to see if the person opening
up the document has the Admin role, if they do leave the value set to True,
else False.
I hope this saves someone else the trouble
of search for this little line of code.

Okay after spending a frustrating day
trying to customize the appointment form in the mailbox template, I have
come to the conclusion on what exactly should be my first template. A
simple but functional appointment calendar template.
This will be a Notes and Domino accessible
template. Expect to see a plain Jane calendar database template that
you can use as a starting point for a group calendar.
Now why am I doing this? If you
look at the mail template, there is a calendar view in there that will
actually do a good job of keeping track of appointments, but it is tied
to the iNotes template. I think what is missing is a simple calendar
database that has no ties to the inotes template.
Necessity is truly the Mother of Invention.
I expect this will be a work in progress, but I really do feel that
this is something that is needed. Wouldn't it be nice to have this
as a template with Lotus Notes? I had to say it.

Okay, I did promise to give a little
more detail about who I am and some people have been asking me well what
exactly will you be bogging about.
First of I am a Lotus Notes/Domino developer.
I have been around the Notes world for about 10 years. In that
time I have worked as a contractor. So a lot of what I will be talking
about will be from the perspective of a contractor and not a full-time.
For some people there may not be a difference, but to me there is.
Stay tuned and I will explain in a future post.
Some of the things that I will like
to bring to you in terms of projects are as follows:
- A series of templates. These
templates will all be connected through the UI and basic shared functionality.
- An import/export excel database.
- A customizable email system.
- And a simple html based email
survey database that actually post back a person's responses via a agent.
Like most people out there, the projects
I will write about is from past experience. For instance, at one
place that I worked, we had an updated set of templates for many different
situations (discussion, library, survey, etc...). If you needed a
new database you could simple use an existing template as-is or use an
existing template as a starting point to build out a more customized application.
A lot of my work will focus on the Notes
Client and in particular the actual UI. Let's face facts, the end
user usually does not care about how something gets done, but rather is
it pleasing to the eyes and can I get what I need done easily.
I will always try and provide a database
as an example because I am more visual type of a person and I know I prefer
to go through a db and ripe it apart.
Also, I will not only talk about Lotus
Notes/Domino. Erskine does have a life and many other interest.
Some of the other things I will cover
and I hope you find interesting:
Racing (atv and motocross)
Football
Martial Arts (Bujinkan TaiJutsu)
Living in PA
Well I hope something in this post has
peaked people's interest. Stay tuned and I will write more this week.
I am hoping to have more details on my first project that I will
be publishing.

First I want to say thanks for all the
good wishes that I received yesterday. It felt really good to get
all of the encouragement.
Second, a few people have reported that
this site is slow and buggy in certain browsers. I will be looking
into this over the weekend to fix the bugs and address the loading time
issue.
Third, I actually have a few projects
in mind that I want to share with everyone. I will give more details
on up coming projects on Monday. Needless to say, I see this weekend
as a working weekend. I am such a geek.
So tune in next week and I will have
a lot more details to share with everyone. I am actually excited
about the things yet to come.
Have a great weekend everyone.

Well after much prodding from
my friends I have finally launched my own blog. OMG look out world.
The purpose of this site is to share with everyone/anyone interested in
my take of Lotus Notes community and work environment from a Contractors
point of view. For those who know me, yes this site will express
my own very strong opinion at times, I promise to warn everyone, but at
the same time I am hoping the things that I share with everyone will make
you think too.
Before I forget I wanted to thank Chris Toohey and Derik Bracke for actually
getting me of my lazy butt and getting this blog off of the ground.
Stay tuned, I have what I believe to be some interesting projects that
I want to share with you and also some comments that just might make you
sit up and take notice. I guess only time will tell.
Next time I will tell you a lot more about myself and what exactly to expect
in terms of topics.
